An Air India Express flight, carrying 160 passengers, made a precautionary landing at Cochin International Airport on Thursday morning due to suspected tyre damage. The incident occurred shortly after the flight took off from Jeddah, heading to Kozhikode.
The aircraft, identified as flight IX 398, diverted to Kochi after the crew detected a possible tyre-related issue. An Air India Express spokesperson clarified that the precautionary measure was necessary as the aircraft’s tyres likely sustained damage from a foreign object detected on the runway during departure from Jeddah.
“The aircraft made a precautionary landing due to suspected damage to the aircraft’s tyre, likely caused by a foreign object on the runway at Jeddah airport,” the spokesperson explained. He also reassured that only the tyres were affected and emphasized that there was no issue with the landing gear.
“It was not an emergency landing. The flight was diverted as a precautionary measure since Kozhikode’s Karipur airport is a tabletop airport,” the official added, ensuring passenger safety remained the airline’s utmost priority.
The flight landed safely at Kochi at approximately 9:07 AM. All passengers on board were reported safe. “All guests are being connected to Kozhikode by road. We regret the inconvenience caused and reiterate that safety remains our highest priority,” the spokesperson stated.
The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) confirmed the safe landing and provided updates regarding the situation. They stated that all necessary emergency services were activated in advance. Fortunately, no injuries to passengers or crew members occurred during the incident.
Post-landing inspections revealed that both right-side tyres on the aircraft had burst. CIAL authorities conducted a thorough inspection of the runway, which was subsequently cleared and restored to normal operations.
