Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marking the commencement of the 18th BRICS Summit. This year’s summit, hosted by India, emphasizes the nation’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and geopolitical discourse.

The leaders convened against the backdrop of the historic Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. This visual symbolizes India’s rich cultural heritage as it takes center stage in global diplomacy.

On Friday, PM Modi engaged in a series of high-level meetings, including discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. These sessions reflect India’s extensive diplomatic outreach and strategic positioning as the host of the BRICS summit, which culminates in 2026.

This meeting with President Putin marks the second encounter between the two leaders this year, following their discussions during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek in August. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders focused on reviewing their bilateral cooperation across diverse sectors. These include politics, defense, energy, trade, and cultural exchanges.

Discussions also highlighted India’s leadership role in BRICS and its engagement within international multilateral frameworks. Critical regional and global challenges, including ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, were part of their dialogue, showcasing the importance of collaboration in navigating complex international issues.

A significant achievement of the summit was the successful negotiation of a joint statement by BRICS nations, finalized after extensive discussions that stretched into the early hours of Saturday. Negotiators worked tirelessly, overcoming differing viewpoints on contentious issues. Leadership from India played a crucial role in fostering consensus and building a unified stance within the group.

This BRICS summit holds particular importance as it marks India’s ongoing contribution to global governance and its strategic partnerships. It comes at a time when the dynamics of international relations are rapidly evolving, demanding cohesive strategies among member nations.

The outcomes of these discussions and the joint statement are poised to shape policies not only within the BRICS framework but also impact the broader geopolitical landscape. As India consolidates its position as a global leader, the successful orchestration of the summit reflects its capabilities in diplomacy and multilateral relations.
