Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has boldly demanded an apology from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar following a controversial incident involving a woman doctor’s naqab. The incident occurred during a government function in Patna on Monday, prompting widespread public outrage.
At a press conference in Jammu, Abdullah criticized Kumar’s actions as entirely unacceptable. During a ceremony where appointment letters were distributed to AYUSH doctors, Kumar allegedly pulled down the woman doctor’s veil and remarked, “What is this?” Abdullah emphasized, “There is no justification for the Chief Minister to touch the clothing of a woman.”
The political ripple effects of the incident deepen as reports indicate the involved doctor has now declined her appointment. Abdullah asserted, “Nitish Kumar should apologize to her and urge her to take up the job.”
In response to Union Minister and BJP leader Giriraj Singh defending Kumar’s actions, Abdullah expressed skepticism, stating, “One cannot expect anything different from the ruling party.” He continued by highlighting a potential double standard, saying, “If a Muslim leader had touched the veil of a Hindu woman in Haryana or Rajasthan, there would have been a huge uproar. But since the woman here is Muslim, the BJP finds nothing wrong.”
Abdullah further clarified that his stance lacked a religious context, arguing instead for the principles of dignity and respect. He stated, “How can anyone touch a woman’s clothes like this? Why did the Chief Minister feel the need to do so?” He urged Kumar to admit his mistake and offer a formal apology.
Political Reactions and Responsibilities
Responding to Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan who suggested a failure in the aerial fight against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, Abdullah asserted that such opinions are personal and do not reflect the official stance of the Congress party. He remarked, “The Congress and other opposition parties stood firmly with the government and the defence forces after the Pahalgam terror attack.”
Abdullah’s visit also aligned with the 11th edition of the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Role Model Series, where he discussed the essence of the “idea of India.”
He recalled the historical decision made by Jammu and Kashmir to accede to India despite being a Muslim-majority state with geographical proximity to Pakistan. “That choice defines the idea of India we must protect,” stated Abdullah.
While acknowledging diverse interpretations of Indian identity, he insisted that democracy allows for healthy debate, even amidst his concerns regarding recent developments.
Merit Over Identity
Abdullah also weighed in on ongoing discussions surrounding admissions in medical colleges and sports selections in Jammu and Kashmir, criticizing the focus on religious identity. He noted controversies sparked after 42 out of 50 students admitted to the Vaishno Devi Medical College were Muslims, as well as concerns regarding the composition of the Jammu and Kashmir football team for the Santosh Trophy.
“The only balance that should matter is between the talented and the untalented,” Abdullah declared emphatically. He concluded, “The India I envision is one where merit alone dictates success—nothing else. Religion should remain irrelevant when it comes to academics or sports.”
